MAGA… The Left… Which Is Worse?

Here is the short answer: Asking “which is worse” is already stepping into the trap.

Both MAGA and “The Left” — as identity blocs — are expressions of cultural truth, not objective truth — and when people root their identity in them, the danger isn’t which side they pick… it’s how tightly they attach to it.

Cultural Truth is a truth decided upon by a large social group… where belonging can override reality. Both MAGA and The Left operate this way as they create shared narratives, reward loyalty, and punish dissent. The issue isn’t their existence — it’s when people stop searching for truth and start defending the tribe.

So the real question is: Where is each side disconnecting from reality? And the honest answer is: both do, but in different ways.

The core principle missing here is balance. As I will say often, you deserve validation, but you don’t deserve agreement. In this instance, each side has real concerns (validation), yet neither side owns the full truth (no automatic agreement). So, when someone says that MAGA is evil or The Left is destroying everything, they are no longer seeking truth, rather they are protecting identity. This is a shift from truth-seeking to tribal defense.

The deeper problem here identity attachment. Why do people cling so hard to these identities? Often it is the fear of losing control, shame, or belonging. This connects directly to shame and identity, as shame drives us to build identities that protect us, not necessarily ones that are true. So, political identity becomes a shield, a sense of worth, or the most dangerous: a replacement for personal identity.

The question of who is worse is the wrong metric. From this perspective, MAGA can become dangerous when it turns into blind loyalty, rejection of reality, or dehumanization. The Left can become dangerous when it turns into moral absolutism, ideological conformity, or suppression of dissent. But it is not about ranking them. The real danger is losing your ability to think, reflect, and hold nuance.

So, instead of picking a side, take the question inward. Are your beliefs yours or are they inherited from your tribe? Did you outsource your identity? Can you criticize your tribe honestly? Are you there seeking truth or confirmation? Do you find yourself reacting emotionally or processing reality? The value here is to weigh your perspective against reality.

If you are debating or proclaiming which side is worse, then you’re still playing the game. That position is rooted in outsourced identity and insecurity. Here it is: Don’t be MAGA, Don’t be The Left, Don’t be a reaction.

Instead, seek truth, accept complexity, and act with integrity regardless of the tribe.
